“Identity has always been of prime concern to individuals as a whole. Almost everyone, at one time or another has been curious to know who he or she is. From Socrates and Plato, down to men in our day, philosophers have wrestled with these questions:
Where did I come from?
Why am I here?
Where am I going?
Fortunately, through gospel teachings, many individuals have been supplied with answers to the questions listed above. Knowledge of where we came from (pre-earth existence), why we are here (earthly existence), and where we will go after death (post-earth existence) has apprised church members of their identity and importance. There are yet others who remain in a quandary as to the purpose of their existence on earth.”

Ed Parker planted the seeds of continual evolutionary progress. Ingrained into its very fabric, his system of martial arts contains spiritual symbolisms evidenced throughout his manuals, creeds, journals and publications. Creating an art that is endless, symbolizes a life which is also endless. Behind the art was a great man of faith, wisely preparing his students for the next big promotion…eternal life. I thoroughly enjoyed our discussions and so did Elvis; for they were based on logic rather than on dogmatic approaches to any given topic. We once talked about whether or not there was a Supreme Being, and I gave him this analogy: “If you examine a Swiss watch on a work stand, could you, for a moment, imagine that it was an accidental collection of springs and wheels and jeweled movements that had somehow miraculously fallen together in that form and that it had begun to tick away keeping perfect time?” |

As Elvis thought through this analogy, he stated, “No, such a thing wouldn’t be possible.” “Elvis, look at your own body. Look at the universe around you. They are infinitely more complex than the most sophisticated watch ever created by man. Can you believe that this precision, this artistry all came about by accident?” He shook his head and said emphatically, “No, Ed, there’s a Creator’s hand behind it all, it’s obvious. It’s plain that a Supreme intelligence put it together.” (Inside Elvis, Parker, 1978) |
